The Role of the Q Angle in Anterior Knee Pain

The Q Angle is the difference of two super imposed lines, one running straight up from the tibial tuberosity(just below your knee), the second line runs from the ASIS of your hip to the middle of your patella(knee cap).

The wider the Q angle the more the knee cap can be pulled laterally(away from your body’s mid line)and this can irritate the cartilage beneath the patella and cause pain.

People who might possibly have a wider Q angle can be women because of a wider pelvis and people who are genu valgum(knock-knees) the extra internal rotation of the patellas again would lead to a wider angle and be more susceptible to lateral pulls of the knee cap.

Q angle also is greater in people who have the genu valgum postural distortion, more commonly known as knock-knees. So while our hip and knee alignments can effect the amount of lateral pull on our patella’s, massage therapy to the lateral quads along with the IT bands and strengthening of the external hip rotators can decrease pain.
